While most students were getting ramped up for summer vacation in the spring of 2014, Brandon sixth-grader Harry Heiberger was doing all he could just to get out of bed. Heiberger was clearly very sick. He was unable to keep food down, was bent over with stomach cramps, battled bouts with nausea and had trouble even walking around. After several visits to the doctor during the last semester of his sixth grade year, medical experts finally reached a diagnosis: Stage three Burkitt’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.
