heading toward cape cod. still lots to watch this morning for sure. good morning, everybody. i m rob nelson. and i m michael marusarz. vinita nair is on vacation. hurricane earl is hitting the north carolina coast with winds over 100 miles an hour. the powerful storm is now moving northeast. earl is now a category 2 hurricane, that s a big downgrade since last night. t.j. winick is live in atlantic beach, north carolina, with a live report on the conditions there. hi, t.j. reporter: rob and mike, good morning to you both. we are definitely dealing with the heaviest bands of rain so far during this storm. you have to remember even with a category 2 hurricane, you re still talking about wind speeds up to 110 miles per hour. the real concern right now here in north carolina is the storm surge. what with these waves behind me here and the flooding it can cause. the storm is still packing quite a wallop as it skirts the outer banks and heads straight for new england.
michael marusarz is filling in. the next couple of days. welcome aboard the late train. the late train, the early train. depends what time your train left. no kidding. very fun. we ll be here all week. it should be fun. good morning, i m rob nelson. hurricane earl is a growing threat this morning out in the atlantic. it s one of three weather systems that forecasters are now watching. hurricane danielle kicked up danger along the east coast. chuck sivertsen reports. reporter: a familiar sound along the eastern seaboard this weekend, lifeguards alerting holiday swimmers to dangerous riptides. it s definitely very, very strong. if you re not an above-average swimmer, we re not recommending anyone out past their knees. riptides pulling you all the way across nearly to the middle of the next beach over. reporter: rescue teams pulled dozens of swimmers out of the water this weekend. it would always pull me under and i d get tossed around under the water.
