In the midst of an abundance of bad news – rising COVID numbers, unemployment, evictions, homelessness and hunger – some good news stories still bubble to the surface.
We find ourselves mostly posting bad, sad or frustrating news in our Sunday newsletter. It’s not our fault, of course, but we want to make sure you come here and smile too. That’s why we’re bringing you this “Good News” column. And sometimes just things to make you smile.
A PRIMATE LIFELINE – BRIDGE OF HOPE
A few weeks ago we posted about wildlife bridges spanning highways to keep wildlife safe. This week, we’re telling you about a “Bridge of hope” for primates. A Florida man who helped dozens of families last holiday season is giving back to his community yet again – and this time, he s assisting more than 100 families in need. Ahead of Christmas in 2019, Michael Esmond paid nearly $4,600 in gas and water bills for 36 Gulf Breeze families whose payments were past due after he experienced similar circumstances back in 1983. So when the holidays rolled around this year, Esmond, 74, felt compelled to do it again – especially after a difficult year that saw Florida pummeled by Hurricane Sally and the economic impacts of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With Esmond s generous $7,615.40 donation to the city, he was able to help 114 families who were facing disconnection of water, gas and sewer services. Business owner Michael Esmond of Gulf Breeze, Florida, donated thousands of dollars to cover the utility bills of 114 families who were late with their payments.
Thanks to his generosity, these families won’t have to worry about having their utilities shut off.
Michael donated more than $7,600 and arranged to have holiday cards mailed to the families, letting them know the bill was paid.
He said he was inspired to make the donation because he knows people have been struggling and is grateful that his business has been chugging along during these challenging times. He said he just wanted to share what he had with the people who need it.
