According to Edwardsville Police Chief Jay Keeven, Vivek Patel, 30, of Edwardsville died in the crash.
A witness told police that at or about 8:40 p.m., Patel was eastbound on Center Grove and passed him on the left, driving at a high rate of speed then lost control about 20 feet east of Sugar Creek Lane. The black 2012 Honda Accord left the north side of the roadway, struck a culvert, Keeven said, and rolled several times, ejecting Patel in the process. The vehicle’s remains came to rest on the edge of Metro-East Lutheran High School’s property. Cross Towing later hauled it away.
