A meteor which lit up the night sky in the Chilean capital Santiago has been caught on camera. The inhabitants of the city heard the sound of the meteor crossing the atmosphere as if it were a burst of thunder.

Video has emerged of a sizeable fireball hurtling across the horizon during the weekend. Dramatic footage shared online clearly depict the space rock glowing bright against the inky black night sky.

When meteors produce such an intense burst of light, they are called a bolide in astronomical terms.
The fireball was caught on camera by several onlookers, which was submitted to the International Meteor Organisation (IMO).
Analysis revealed that the small space rock was roughly three metres in size, and produced an explosion in the sky to the equivalent of 9.5 kt TNT.
Research also revealed that the meteor hit the planet s atmosphere at a staggering 13.6 kilometres per second, or slightly more than 48,000 kilometres per hour. Extraterrestrial meteor hits Earth above China at more than 48,000 kilometres per hour (Image: YOUTUBE - GETTY)
