The hand-built house belonging to Darrell Roberts Jr., and his wife, Gail, who work at City High School and the Melrose Meadows Retirement Community in Iowa City, burned to the ground last week.
The couple s 2,500-square-foot home was located about 30 minutes south of Iowa City, in Lone Tree, sandwiched far from the road in a woody bend near the Iowa River. The fire destroyed everything inside the house, including five cars, and likely killed a dog named Kitty, and a cat named Baby, who were trapped inside at the time of the blaze.
It s unclear exactly when or how the fire began on Feb. 23, although authorities do not expect foul play.
