New Lake Tahoe crackdown on rentals could make it much harder to snag an Airbnb or Vrbo

Lake Tahoe is beginning to clamp down on vacation rentals. By the end of 2021, the region will have fewer short-term rentals overall and stricter rule-enforcement on those that remain, including properties on Airbnb and Vrbo.
The most significant change to the rental landscape is occurring in South Lake Tahoe, where approximately 1,400 short-term rentals will be whittled down to 400, concentrated in the city’s downtown tourism area, by year’s end. Other popular locations, including Truckee and parts of the lake’s west shore, have recently taken steps to regulate vacation rentals and rein in issues associated with them, such as noise, litter and parking problems.
