The 13-year-old girl, whose complaints about her teacher’s actions led to an online campaign against him, recently admitted she was not even in the class that day. She said she did not see the controversial cartoons of Muhammad personally, but a girl in her class showed them to her, BBC reports.

The history and geography teacher had given a lesson on freedom of expression, asking the question, “To be or not to be Charlie?” referring to the hashtag in support of Charlie Hebdo after a terror attack on the satirical magazine’s offices in 2015 left 12 dead. Before he went to show students a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad, he told Muslim students they could close their eyes or stand in the hall, so as not to be offended.
