night. the fire was quick to jump from house to house getting people to safety needed to be done even quicker. somebody was knocking on my door. i came to the door. its was a fire. reporter: that person was matthew flores, he spotted the flames and went door to door making sure they woke up and got out. my first thought was, i had to help people out of the house. difficult anything anybody else would do. reporter: twelve adults and six children made it out safely. fire fighters rescued two men themselves. they were taken to the hospital in stable condition. when crew as arrived around 11:30 flames were shooting on you the of the first and second floors from where the fire started and flames were spreading. and the fire extend to the right of the original fire dwelling, involving four more other homes. reporter: causes still under investigation and fire marshall is looking into whether these homes had working smoke alarms. smoke alarms they may in the prevent fir
nightly news begins right now. announcer: from nbc news world headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with lester holt. good evening. it is one of the greatest mysteries of our time. the fate of malaysia air flight 370 and the 239 people on board. tonight many are holding their breath, wondering if it s finally on the verge of being solved. video and photos of a large piece of plane wreckage found on a remote island in the indian ocean are carefully being scrutinized. we should tell you from the start not all the experts agree. investigators believe the debris in the images is consistent with a boeing 777. the same as the missing malaysia airlines jet. nbc s tom costello has been working the story all day. what do we know right now? reporter: lots of phone calls. and sources now tell nbc news that boeing investigators have looked at the photo and they believe it is in fact a piece of a wing. perhaps a flap from a boeing 777. there s only one boeing 777 th
the numbers correspond to a 777 as well. a small part of the aircraft but it could be a very important piece of evidence. also washing ashore remnants of what appear to be a suitcase. though there is skepticism this piece of luggage may come from mh 370. island police confirm it is being included in the investigation. this wreckage discovered almost a year and a half after mh370 disappears. the fact that this wreckage was sighted on the northern part of the reunion island is consistent with the current movement. as investigators in france await the arrival of the debris a u.s. intelligence assessment suggests someone in mh370 s cobb mitt may have deliberately set the plane off course. nobody wants to be responsible for giving false hope to family who is suffered so much. when you retrace the current, it could be mh370. it s going to be all about what happens when this finally gets there tomorrow morning. the first tangible clue in 500 days. thanks so much. that wing
more on this. allison, we ve got severe weather moving through chicago? we do. the good news is it s not widespread severe weather. we ve got some severe thunderstorm watch boxes just off to the north. in chicago where the event is going on we have just one little severe thunderstorm warning. they did temporarily halt the concert just to be on the safe side. it s moving very fast at about 50 miles per hour to the east. the worst of it, the large hail damaging winds, and the real heavy downpours, that should stay just north of grant park. but they will likely see a few light showers. they want to err op the side of caution. we know the lightning can spread outside of the main storm. probably best bet just to make sure those folks do seek shelter. the good news is because it is moving so fast off to the east likely in about the next 20 to 30 minutes, folks can get back out and enjoy the music festival once again. thanks so much. appreciate that. now back to the other weat
