By Guy Busby SPANISH FORT – A proposed Amazon distribution center in Spanish Fort has some city officials questioning whether noise from the facility could disturb nearby residents. Amazon has proposed building a distribution center at the Spanish Fort Town Center. The facility would employ about 115 people and is scheduled to open in 2022, according to city reports. At the City Council work session on Monday, Feb. 1, council members discussed a request by Amazon to modify the city zoning code designation of B-4 to allow the center to have more lights and truck deliveries after regular business hours. At an earlier meeting, council members said plans for the center call for large trucks to come into the facility between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. to be unloaded. Smaller delivery vans will be loaded and leave the center to make deliveries to homes and businesses in the region starting at about 9 a.m. ....
By Guy Busby SPANISH FORT – City Council members increased funding for the Spanish Fort Volunteer Fire Department by 20 percent, to $1 million, as the municipality continues to study making the organization a city department. The council voted unanimously in a special meeting Wednesday, Jan. 6, to approve the annual contract with the fire department. The contract calls for the city to provide $1 million to the department in the current fiscal year that began Oct. 1. Last year, the city gave the department $800,000. Mayor Mike McMillan said the increase would be about enough to cover the department’s 2019-20 deficit of $179,000. This year, the SFVFD also plans to add three more full-time paid firefighters and will need to begin payments on a loan for a new fire engine. ....
By Guy Busby SPANISH FORT – City officials are asking federal authorities to not close the community post office in January. The Spanish Fort City Council voted unanimously Friday to pass a resolution opposing the closing and to appeal the decision. Mayor Mike McMillan said the closing would leave the city’s population of almost 10,000 and as many residents living outside the corporate limits with no post office north of Interstate 10. “We passed a resolution basically opposing the closing of the Spanish Fort Post Office,” McMillan said. “We are appealing to them to follow their procedures of having predetermined hearings, mailouts, notifications of that. We also have noted that our Congressional delegation has been misled in this process, therefore we need to move forward.” ....
