City of Portland Last week, Mayor Ted Wheeler announced that Dr. Markisha Smith, director of the city s Office of Equity and Human Rights, will be joining his office to serve a first-of-its-kind role: a special advisor on racial justice and equity. Smith, who s been leading the Office of Equity since February 2019, has been increasingly called on by Wheeler to weigh in on citywide issues regarding racial equity issues. With the new role, beginning February 8, Smith will be formally recognized for that extra work and be able to ensure equity becomes more than just an easy buzzword in the mayor s office. Smith will take on the new responsibility while continuing to lead the city s equity office.

Mayor Ted Wheeler hires former Portland leader Sam Adams KATU Staff © Provided by KATU Portland Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has made some new additions to his team, announcing Thursday that former mayor Sam Adams will be starting next month.  Adams served as Portland s mayor for a single term, from 2009-2012. He also spent a term as a city commissioner and was the Chief of Staff for Portland Mayor Vera Katz for more than a decade.  He joins the current administration as Director of Strategic Innovations; Wheeler s office said Adams will lead work on key second-term policy priorities.   “Sam’s knowledge of Portland City Hall and his track record of action and getting things done is much welcomed. He’s innovative, smart, and energetic. He will play an important role in advancing my second-term priorities, Wheeler said in a Thursday statement.
