a whopping 37 officers resign since July 2020. I think this summer was really tough on officers, Lovell responded, referring to Portland s racial justice protests. It took its toll on people and maybe made them want to rethink next steps in their career. People are human, and they want to do their work and be appreciated and be supported. So that’s definitely a factor. Or
maybe they might not want to be associated with an organization who has zero interest in confronting its own systemic racism and brutality? (Ugh. I m giving them too much credit again, aren t I?)

In local news:
• A Springfield restaurant called Along Came Trudy is facing over $9,000 in state fines for violating pandemic safety protocols. Oregon OSHA s report on the restaurant mentions that they were up against armed people standing outside the business who threatened regulatory agencies and their staff members. I guess what they said was true: Trudy really
did come along, and she brought her shotgun with her.
• Some Oregon pharmacies will starting getting COVID-19 vaccine doses next week for the first time. The federal government is shipping a million doses out to pharmacies across the country, and Oregon s portion will go to some Costco, Albertsons, and Safeway locations. The vaccine will only be available for people currently eligible in Oregon.

Dr. Markisha Smith speaking at a June 2020 press conference at Portland City Hall. City of Portland
Last week, Mayor Ted Wheeler announced that Dr. Markisha Smith, director of the city s Office of Equity and Human Rights, will be joining his office to serve a first-of-its-kind role: a special advisor on racial justice and equity. Smith, who s been leading the Office of Equity since February 2019, has been increasingly called on by Wheeler to weigh in on citywide issues regarding racial equity issues. With the new role, beginning February 8, Smith will be formally recognized for that extra work and be able to ensure equity becomes more than just an easy buzzword in the mayor s office. Smith will take on the new responsibility while continuing to lead the city s equity office.
