2021 River To River Festival Lineup Announced
Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) presents the 20th annual River To River Festival, Downtown New York City s leading free summer arts festival, taking place June 10-27.
From its origins in the aftermath of 9/11 to the present context of the global pandemic, River To River has long highlighted the fundamental role that creativity in all its forms plays in processes of recovery, resilience and renewal. This year, the cathartic power of groundbreaking work by pioneering artists is on full display, in a wide-ranging program that takes into account the present moment and offers audiences new ways of seeing and opportunities for profound connection-with the artists themselves, with New York City as it emerges from a pandemic and with one another.

BEFORE SITTING DOWN AT MY DESK for the inaugural evening of the Public Theater’s digital edition of its annual Under the Radar Festival, I scroll through my phone, looking at costumed marauders storming the Capitol Building. The pictures depict smiling Vikings, Confederate and Revolutionary war soldiers, Captain America as a paratrooper holding a straw broom. Is he a warlock, or a street-sweeper? There are enough mixed metaphors for heroism to make your head explode, and I am struck by how desperate people are for cosplay, their imaginations totally warped by popular fictions.
Baryshnikov Arts Announces Digital Season
New work by Kyle Marshall, Bijayini Satpathy, Justin Hicks and others will debut throughout the spring.

The coming digital season at Baryshnikov Arts Center will feature the premieres of seven video works that the organization commissioned in September from artists including Kyle Marshall, Bijayini Satpathy and Justin Hicks. The debuts begin on Feb. 1 with the release of Satpathy’s “Vibhanga,” a piece that draws on classical Indian dance forms, and conclude in late June with Marshall’s “STELLAR,” a choreographed outgrowth of improvisation sessions that he will conduct on Zoom this spring. Each video will be available to stream on-demand for free at bacnyc.org for two weeks.
