Spiro Agnew, in full Spiro Theodore Agnew, also called Spiro T. Agnew, (born November 9, 1918, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. died September 17, 1996, Berlin, Maryland), 39th vice president of the United States (1969–73) in the Republican administration of President Richard M. Nixon. He was the second person to resign the nation’s second highest office (John C. Calhoun was the first in 1832) and the first to resign under duress. Agnew was the son of Theodore Agnew, a Greek-immigrant restaurateur who had shortened his name from Anagnostopoulos, and Margaret Akers, from Virginia.
