After the Romans crushed Jerusalem in 70 A.D., they built a Roman colony on its ruins. After Constantine the Great converted to Christianity in 312, his mother, St. Helena, came to the Holy Land. She located the site where Jesus was crucified and ordered that the temple to Venus that had been built there be torn down in order to build a church: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
