Students participate in a public relations campaign for LOPA

As part of a public relations capstone class, Manship School of Mass Communication students are working with an organization called âStudents for LOPAâ to raise awareness for donating and debunking myths regarding organ donors.
According to its website, LOPA (Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency) is a federally designated, not for profit organ and tissue recovery agency for the state of Louisiana. The student groupâs goal is to create a public relations campaign to spread awareness and education about organ donations and to increase the number of donors from college students.
Mass communication senior Whitney Hicks said she decided to work on the organ donor project because she felt that it was an important cause. She served as the writing director for the group. ....

COVINGTON, La. - Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA) announced Tuesday a record number of Louisianians gave the gift of life last year through organ and tissue donation. These heroes offered hope and healing in the midst of 2020 challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a historic hurricane season.
With one tissue donor able to restore health or enhance the lives of up to 50 people, the 14% increase in tissue donors over 2019 is significant. A total of 498 heroes and their families said yes to tissue donation last year, according to a spokesperson for LOPA. Applications for tissue donation include heart valve transplants for children born with congenital heart defects, skin grafts for burn victims, and a variety of orthopedic rehabilitation procedures. ....
