Let s get a reality check now on what the president will say and what he can actually get done. joining me now, washington post political reporter nia-malika henderson and resident fellow, bill schneider. bill, i ll start with you. you argue that of the two main issues on the president s plate, immigration and gun control, he has a much better shot at making progress in immigration. why? because his party is solidly behind him on immigration and republicans are scared to death of that issue because that s one of the reasons why they did so badly in the election last year. on guns, democrats are split and the republicans are solidly against it. so, on those two issues, i d say he stands a much better chance of getting some progress on the immigration issue. but we do think at this particular juncture that he does get something done on gun control, correct? i think he might very well get some progress on background checks, maybe on limits on magazine sales, but very unlikely to s
Restrict gun ownership rights, the inevitable outcome is gun sales, magazine sales, ammo sales guthrough the roof. it is the polar opposite intention of what people on debbie s side. argument want to see. we saw this before president obam was elected, when hadt looked like he was going to be elected in 2008 and the time period between the inauguration, you see the big jump in gun sales. there has been some degree of. too much concern on the part of gun owners and people said, the president s going to take away all of our guns. i don t think that was likely to happen. i still don t think it s likely to happen. but when you read the washington post piece and the ways in which the president has been a maximalist president, he has goneaz as far as he can go, as far as politics will let him go. i do think gun owners are right
