look in the storage records and then they find these three files, three classified documents, in trump s desk drawer. so certainly laying out the case that this was justified. they also on this issue because this is really about whether a special master and third party can review these documents, they re saying these aren t trump s documents to review, they belong to the american people. there is no executive privilege. trump never asserted executive privilege at any point along the process until the search warrant was executed. they re saying that, you know, to permit a special master to get involved at this point could cause unnecessary significant harm because there s also a you have the intelligence agencies to see what was in these documents and whether there is any potential harm to sources and methods. thank you for helping us just begin to understand what s in here. a lot that we did not know yesterday at this time. thank you so much. and joining us now is cnn
part of the republican party. and he will continue to do that. reporter: and joining us now is washington post national political reporter isaac ards. thank you so much for being with us. i want to start with the piece that you co-authored entitled trump plots aggressive midterm strategy seen in gop as double-edged sword. so could you mean by the double edged swords. in the primary, what we heard was trump s first general election rally. in the primaries he was the envy of all. his endorsement, his backing, every candidate wanted that and what you started to see almost immediately after those candidates won the primary was, taking trump off the top of their website, like dr. oz did. and starting to try to put some distance between themselves and trump. because while he is the number one thing for primary voters, the republican base, with the general election electorate, it is a little bit of a different story. and so what strategists are trying to figure out, republican s
maga forces are determined to take this country backwards. backwards to an america where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love. not every republican, not even the majority of republicans are maga republicans, but there s no question that the republican party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by donald trump and the maga republicans, and that is a threat to this country. history tells us that blind loyalty to a single leader and a willingness to engage in political violence is fatal to democracy. i will not the will of the american people be overturned by wild conspiracy theories and baseless evidence claims of fraud. i will not stand by and watch elections in this country stolen by people who simply refuse to accept that they lost. democracy cannot survive when one side believes there are only two outcomes to an election, either they win or they were cheated. and that s where the maga republicans
factors in play, demographic factors, the pandemic through a hammer in everything. i think if they say, look, here s what we know, here s what we don t know and we re doing the best we can, i think that s trust building. any one of the cross currents in the global economy now would be newsworthy and unsetting. and there are many. and coming out of this pandemic, we tried to measure the economy, is it recession, maybe not recession. we re just trying to get back to normal at this point. we re still reacting to a pandemic, and trying to figure out where we go from here. fair question about what would be normal in 2022 and going forward because i think another thing he has to address, and you talk about this, is possible we re just in a different era, that the u.s. economy and the world economy is moving to a new place where, you know, we can t expect 30 years of low, really low interest rates. i totally agree with that. i ve been writing that for some time. i have a new b
down claims by trump s attorney that this was a case about records that belonged to trump saying that the documents were not his to have. for her part, judge kennan is at times inclined to order a review of documents into a a special master. quote, justice department attorneys repeatedly pleaded with cannon not to interrupt their ongoing criminal probe that the search warrant excused on august 8th was clearly valid and authorized to obtain evidence of three significant federal crimes. cannon said she was concerned about a couple of instances in which the investigative team had flagged potentially privileged material that was not screened out during the initial review of records. that s the team that was assigned to prevent such occurrences. judge cannon did say that she would unseal a more detailed list by agents at mar-a-lago meaning that we could learn a whole lot more about that extraordinary search. while we await, it is important to put it in broader context. new york
