Food deserts have forced some St. John's residents to travel long distances for the most basic of goods, sometimes paying $30 or more for taxis in the process. But a new initiative by Food First N.L. is trying to tackle food insecurity.
Food First N.L. is behind a new pop-up shop travelling through St. John's to sell fresh produce. The non-profit food security group says transportation is a barrier that prevents people with lower income from accessing fruits and vegetables, so that's why they're now selling fresh food right at their doorsteps.
The rising price of food is making it harder to feed communities in need. MacMorran Community Centre in St. John's serves free meals several times a week, but the grocery bill for those meals keeps going up, and so does the number of people sitting down at their tables.
