Maple Weekend canceled but some maple producers still welcome visitors


Pre-pandemic, this was the time of year when sugar shanties across the state opened their doors to allow the public to see first hand how sap becomes maple syrup. But for the second consecutive year, the New York State Maple Producers Association, organizers of the statewide Maple Weekends, has canceled the event.
“Our Board of Directors has been actively monitoring all official information concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on our ability to safely conduct public events like Maple Weekend,” Executive Director Helen Thomas wrote in a statement issued by the association. “We recognize our obligation to public safety for any event that we officially promote and sponsor across all of our regions. Therefore, the board has unanimously decided to cancel the statewide official Maple Weekend for 2021.” ....

Magro family, owners of Stefano's Pizzeria, purchase building that houses downtown Carthage staple | Jefferson County


CARTHAGE — After 15 years of leasing, the Magro family has purchased the downtown building which houses Stefano’s Pizzeria and Restaurant.
“Great — it feels like coming back home,” said Salvatore Magro, who is part of the second generation of the family — along with his sister Stefania Peebles — to run the local pizzeria business.
Their father, Stefano Magro, a native of Sicily, had helped his brothers establish a pizzeria in Sherburne before branching out on his own. The senior Mr. Magro and his wife Toni decided settle in Carthage and opened their first pizzeria on State Street in the summer of 1985. As the business grew, they moved into a larger space next door and became a community favorite. ....
