and houston rushes out. the country that put the first man in space is quitting the international space station. the impact on future missions just ahead. but first, your money and cnn business reporter matt egan is here with us. today s consumer confidence report was the first major data point in this critical week for the u.s. economy. what did it show? simply put americans are not happy with this economy. consumer confidence dropping for a third month in a row in july. to put this into context, the lowest level for consumer confidence since february of 2021. not only is confidence well below the peak of last year, it s not even close to the pre-covid levels, closer to the covid lows, which is pretty amazing. this is a telling stat despite the very strong jobs market, just 17% of consumers said business conditions were good. 24% say conditions are bad. now this is a big deal because consumer spending is the biggest driver of the economy. if people slow their spending, a

so now every city employee required to provide proof of vaccination or go along that path of the weekly covid tests that he talked about. good to see you. thank you very much. so meantime the city of st. louis and st. louis county, they are imposing their own indoor mask requirements once again. cnn s suzanne malveaux is live in st. louis with much more on what is happening there. i believe officials there spoke in this morning. what are you hearing. reporter: they just wrapped up the press conference and the county executive of st. louis county, they made it very clear, they said masks save lives and they re looking at the numbers, kate. and they say that they rival the ones back in the winter when they were at the peak, the height of the covid surge. they re experiencing another one. they also said that the delta variant really just spread like wildfire and so they are trying to get this under control. what will happen, it is already gone into effect here is that
reporter: for more than two months people are breathing a sigh of relief for not having to wear a mask, and all of that is changing on monday for the people here in st. louis and st. louis county. we re in the state of missouri, and this is where the mask mandate will, in fact, take effect. so they will have to wear masks for indoor public spaces. that is everyone as well as public transportation, everyone 5 years old and solder, the vaccinated as well as the unvaccinate. the only exception will be for those who are eating or drinking at a bar or a public restaurant or those who have a disability who cannot put on or take off their masks. there ll also be a strong recommendation to wear masking outdoors as well. now, the mayor as well as the county executive say this is for the health and safety, well-being of the people here. there has been an incredible surge in covid cases recently. the pushback to the mask mandate has been swift. to the attorney general eric midt running for the
