Regarding the Ledger article about CS/HB 7045 approved by the House [ GOP one step closer to long-sought vouchers, April 22]. Interestingly, Rep. Randy Fine, R-Palm Bay, rejects the notion that education should be accountable to government. He stated, I believe education should be accountable to parents.
Why is it, then, that Florida legislators apply this concept only to voucher students and not to the students who attend public schools? As a retired educator, I have seen public school teachers, students and administrators being held to higher standards over the last 40 years, particularly with standardized test scores. Tests designed to measure progress and direct instruction have been used as political weapons to punish teachers, students and schools.
