Following the Government of Ontario’s announcement Friday afternoon, the Middlesex-London Health Unit expanded its COVID-19 vaccination eligibility to youth 12 years of age and older which started Sunday. In order to be eligible, individuals must be 12 years of age or older on the day of their vaccination. For clarity, individuals cannot receive their vaccine if they are 11 years old at the time of their appointment but turning 12 later this year. Furthermore, all youth aged 12 to 17 will receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, as it is the only vaccine authorized for this age group in Canada, and will be directed to book their appointment at either the North London Optimist Community Centre or the soon-to-be-opened Earl Nichols Arena clinic.
LONDON, ONT. Twelve-year-old Kyla Ross led the charge on Tuesday by becoming one of the first in her age group to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. “I went in, I went through a lot of processes and then I finally got the vaccine.” The Middlesex-London region, along with the province, expanded vaccine eligibility to youth ages 12-17 years old on Sunday. Kyla received her first dose at the Earl Nichols Recreation Centre in south London on Tuesday morning. It is one of two sites administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to that age group, with the other site located at the North London Optimist Community Centre.

There were 97 new COVID-19 cases reported this weekend not including the holiday Monday, when no new data were released and no new deaths. Another 156 cases were deemed resolved on Saturday and Sunday.

“We’ve been walking into the wind for 18 months on this pandemic. It’s constantly like walking into the wind, and I think we’re starting to see the wind at our backs,” said associate medical officer of health Alex Summers.
