Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature

Those of a certain age will recall having spent hours reading to smaller people, with a mixture of boredom, fascination, and amusement, the illustrated stories of Beatrix Potter (1866–1943). But for the children listening and looking, the impact of these beast fables—about the doings of Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher, and Benjamin Bunny, among others—will likely have been more profound than any reading that came later, especially if accompanied by the stories of Potter’s English fellow travelers from about the same period: A. A. Milne with Winnie the Pooh and Kenneth Grahame with Wind in the Willows.

The Newly Discovered Giant Flores Stork

A new species of stork has been identified from Flores, which is the Indonesian island on which the famous "hobbit" fossils have been found. The "hobbit" is a form of hominid (human relative) that seems to be a diminutive form of Homo erectus but different enough from that widespread species to give it a distinct taxonomic status, Homo floresiensis.

Fossil named after Kermit the Frog sheds light on amphibian evolution, scientists say

Scientists described the fossilized skull of Kermitops gratus, a creature that lived in what is now Texas about 270 million years ago, naming it after Kermit the Frog because of its resemblance to the iconic Muppet character.
