So i dont think this is just a little side study in president ial studies, i dont think its just a little subfield. I think were realizing increasingly that the president ial faith is something thats really important. And sometimes i think we probably wish we had known more about a president s faith before he actually got elected or before he ran. So this is just not an area of bigotry, its not trying to figure out, oh, where do i disagree with this person or how can i, you know, how can i oppose them theologically, its about ....

It started when my coauthor david fisher approached me. I did not know him well. He said to me there is this amazing story out there of Abraham Lincoln in the final case he ever argued. There is a transcript of the trial. It is the only transcript that exists of a case lincoln argued. He said do you want to join me in writing a book about this case . I did not believe there was this Great Lincoln case with a transcript out there no one knew about. He was right. The transcript had only been found in the 1980s. There had been no serious book written about it. We joined together in this effort. It led us on this journey where we would look for great cases with transcripts of the actual trial involving wellknown people. President s of the u. S.
