Mangaluru, Apr 24: Customs officials of Mangaluru International airport seized 196 grams of gold worth nearly Rs 10 lakh from a male passenger who arrived from Dubai.
Officials said on Saturday that the passenger identified as Abdul Raheem Eriyal Jafar, hailing from Po Kudlu, Kasargod, Kerala, landed at Adani Mangalore International Airport on Friday night and he was taken into custody.
The accused had concealed the mercury coated gold strips in Kitchenware, Gas lighters, MP3 Player and Earphone carried in checked in baggage.

Recipient of the Padma Shri, Kannada Sahitya Akademi Award and the Pampa Award among others, G Venkatasubbiah s contribution to the world of Kannada dictionary science is huge. His works include socio-linguistic dictionaries encompassing Kannada phrases, idiomatic expressions, usages and history of dialects, which are a goldmine for linguists and others.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: Centenarian, Kannada writer, grammarian, editor, lexicographer and critic Ganjam Venkatasubbiah passed away during the early hours of Monday due to old age complications. He was 107.
He breathed his last at 1:15 am. Dignitaries from various fields have condoled his death.
He is primarily known for his contribution to the world of Kannada lexicography and is renowned as a walking encyclopaedia of the Kannada language and culture.
He compiled 12 dictionaries, authored four seminal works on dictionary science in Kannada, edited over sixty books and published several papers.

People of Karnataka called G. Venkatasubbaiah (GV), who passed away on Monday at 107, a “walking dictionary” and it was no cliché. Even at an advanced age, the lexicographer remained the final arbiter on Kannada words, their etymology, usage, and grammar.
GV, suffering from age-related illnesses, was admitted to a private hospital a week ago. His last rites were conducted with State honours on Monday.
