Easter weekend records low fatalities

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has on Thursday commended South African motorists for good behaviour following a total of 162 fatalities compared to 235 in 2021. Addressing the media at the Grasmere Toll Plaza where he was unveiling the Easter Weekend statistics, he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. There were 2 395 traffic fines compared to 5 923 last year. He announced that all major highways indicated that the number of cars on the roads remained the same except in KwaZulu-Natal where traffic volumes decreased by approximately 21% because of floods. “Our analysis shows that while the trend of fatalities per time of the day continues to show that most fatalities occur at night, a new phenomenon was noted this Easter with fatalities showing a sharp spike in the early hours of the morning between 04:00 and 05:00. This includes the bus crash that occurred on the N1 near Leu Gamka on Good Friday,” said Mbalula. This Easter period
