SCCMS Season Finale

SCCMS 2020/2021 Season Finale The South Coast Chamber Music Series (SCCMS) presents “Radiance,” on May 15, virtually. Get ready for a garden of musical delights!  SCCMS closes its season with three works of particular brilliance. The second String Quartet of distinguished African-American composer Florence Price illuminates and inspires after a century of neglect. Francis Poulenc’s sole Violin Sonata, written in memory of poet Federico García Lorca, burns with lyricism and virtuosity in the hands of concertmaster Jesse Holstein. In homage to the centenary of his passing, our program closes with the effulgent Piano Quartet Op. 41 of Camille St. Saens. A spring celebration indeed!

Sheffield Chamber Players look forward to return of house concerts

Keith Powers Correspondent Chamber music encompasses vast possibilities solo works, sonatas, trios, quartets and many other configurations. The repertory can range from Bach cello suites to “Pierrot Lunaire” or “Metamorphosen.” But the original intent persists. Music to play in rooms.  Your rooms, or your neighbor’s rooms. Intimate spaces, for music lovers and their friends. And until the pandemic struck, those were the only places to hear the Sheffield Chamber Players. The Sheffield Chamber Players got formed seven years ago on the house concert model. Including cellist Leo Eguchi, violinists Sasha Callahan and Megumi Stohs Lewis, violist Alexander Vavilov and various guests, the group has performed for small audiences in homes across greater Boston. Unless you are one of the group’s many hosts, or friends of those hosts, you likely haven’t heard of them.

From Russia with Love for Valentine s Weekend

The Herald News NEW BEDFORD The South Coast Chamber Music Series will present “From Russia with Love,” virtually. What better way to celebrate winter than a troika of Russian beauties? Shostakovich hits a playfully tart bull’s-eye with his first String Quartet (1938), composed after the huge success of his Fifth Symphony reinstated the composer in official favor. Rachmaninoff’s beloved Vocalise, arranged for viola and piano, weaves its melancholy magic, after which the C Minor Piano Trio by Rimsky-Korsakov brings our Russian ride to a fittingly colorful end.  The musicians performing in this concert are principal chairs of the NBSO Jesse Holstein (violin), EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks (violin), Anna Griffis (viola), Leo Eguchi (cello), and SCCMS Artistic Director Janice Weber (piano).
