you. cnn senior correspondent, congressional correspondent, manu raju joins us. where are these talks now? reporter: they re still going on. it s uncertain whether or not they can get a deal. there are key issues they have to resolve, and also key questions, namely whether or not there will be enough support in order to overcome a republican led filibuster, 60 votes in the u.s. senate to get there. before that they need to have a deal, and the deal they re discussing, is a narrow one, not going as far as a lot of democrats would like, not going to outallaw any sort of high powered semiautomatic rifles, and not raising the age from 18 to 21 to buy the rifles, instead focusing on handful of issues, investments in mental health, school security and dealing with background checks so people can actually look into the juvenile records of individuals buying those guns, and also dealing with the issue of red flag laws. those happen in a number of states have these laws so authorities can g

that president biden is trying to get passed. what they re not in line about is how to do that. under the senate process, it would require 60 votes to overcome a republican led filibuster, they don t have any republicans who will support overcoming a dfilibuster on one of the bills. that s why they re negotiating a rules change to advance the bill by just 51 votes. joe manchin, kyrsten sinema, the two moderate senators have for months, noted their opposition to changing the rules. you need 2/3 majority to change the roles of the senate, that builds bipartisan consensus. changing the rules on party lines could have dramatic ramifications on the senate, and they oppose going along on this partisan basis to change rules, and they are not changing their position. what does this all mean? that means there s going to be a vote this week on these bills. they will probably be blocked, and then at that point there
they have to go through the amendment process and then get 60 votes and out of the senate. so there are still some hurdles to go through. some optimism they ll get there but they have to get through both chambers of congress and that would happen until sometime this fall. okay. we ll watch that closely. there is a big meeting today. chuck schumer, nancy pelosi meeting with the president on voting rights. what do we know about that? reporter: there is an effort among democrats to try to unify behind one bill to overhaul voting laws. there was the effort trying to sweeping the measure for the people act but that was blocked by a republican led filibuster. but democrats don t have all 50 members in line behind that single piece of policy because of joe manchin, the west virginia democrat who opposes that bill. they ve since talked about trying to scale that back and try to get all 50 democrats on board with what joe manchin has been talking about and there have been discussions behind
