Illustration by Laura Normand / The Verge The European Union (EU) has formally opened an investigation into X, the platform previously known as Twitter, to ensure it's complying with the Digital Services Act (DSA) following Hamas' attack on Israel in early October and subsequent Israeli air assault on Gaza. According to the request, this comes after "indications received by the Commission services of the alleged spreading of illegal content and disinformation, in particular the spreading of terrorist and violent content and hate speech." Earlier this week, EU Commissioner Thierry Breton sent a letter to X owner Elon Musk alleging that the platform is "being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU." Illustration by Laura Normand / The Verge The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is proposing a new rule that it hopes will put an end to hidden junk fees that some businesses often add as a surprise when consumers are checking out. The agency is currently seeking public comment on the rule, known as the Trade Regulation Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees, after having already collected 12,000 comments last year from individuals, businesses, law enforcement groups, and others on how deceptive fees affect them. FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement that "by hiding the total price, these junk fees make it harder for consumers to shop for the best product or service and punish businesses who are honest upfront." Laura Normand / The Verge Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he's "ready today" to fight Elon Musk, who owns Twitter (currently rebranding as X), and that although he had suggested August 26th as the date for their cage match, Musk hasn't confirmed and he's not holding his breath. Zuckerberg included a screenshot of Musk tweeting about lifting weights to prepare. In response to Musk's announcement that the fight would be "live-streamed on X" with proceeds going to a charity for veterans, Zuckerberg suggested they "use a more reliable platform that can actually raise money for charity." The Meta CEO also said he loves the sport and "will continue competing with people who train no matter what happens here." Meta itself has declined to comment beyond. Continue reading… ....
Image: Laura Normand / The Verge The Elon Musk-owned X Corp. is suing four unnamed individuals over allegations they illegally scraped user data from Twitter, as first reported by CNBC. The lawsuit was filed in a Dallas County, Texas, court on July 6th and seeks over $1 million in damages. According to the complaint, the four entities, which are identified only by their IP addresses, unlawfully scraped Twitter user data in violation of the platform's terms of service. The lawsuit describes these IP addresses as "flooding" Twitter's sign-up page with "automated requests," which allegedly put a strain on the company's servers and disrupted users' experience.
