In the year when a pandemic swept the globe, one image will endure as a symbol of our collective, deeply felt gratitude during a tumultuous time. From New York, to Rome, cities reverberated with the sound of people stepping out to clap and cheer our most essential workers, those working in healthcare. Among those applauded were some of the 28 million nurses and midwives serving as part of the global front line response. Nurses and midwives are the backbone of global healthcare. In low-resource and war-torn countries they are often the only healthcare professionals a person sees. And yet they don t always get the recognition that they received this year, or that they deserve.
