The University of Hawaiʻi celebrated the life of alumnus Alice Ball on Feb. 28. Ball was the first African American graduate at UH and the first woman to receive a master's degree in chemistry in 1915. She found a successful treatment for Hansen's disease, or leprosy, in 1916.
