heartbreak goes so much deeper. at least 25 people are now confirmed dead in mississippi. another person was killed in alabama for perspective in all of this, consider this fact more people have been killed by tornadoes and the past 24 hours than in all of last year in the united states last hour, i spoke with mississippi democratic congressman bennie thompson, whose district includes some of the worst damage from the storm. here s what he had to say. it was devastation beyond imagination. uh first of all, we had no lights in the entire community. uh people were absolutely stunned at what had just occurred. and so as the night wore on, it was clear. that this was something, uh, that people have never seen before. congressman thompson also told us that tomorrow the head of homeland security alejandro mayorkas, will visit the area along with the fema administrator. cnn s nick valencia, is in rolling fork mississippi. nick ah, good to see you back on the air. i know that devasta

with this breaking news. rescue teams are now on a desperate searching rescue for survivors after powerful destructive storms ripped through the south tornadoes tearing through mississippi overnight. at least 23 people are confirmed dead. another dead in alabama. dozens more injured and at least four others are still missing at this hour and many of the deaths happening in the town of rolling fork, mississippi neighborhoods there are simply leveled extraordinary scene there. the mayor sharing this bleak assessment of the damage on cnn this morning. right? that s all i see. a lot of families here are affected. uh lot of families are hurting. uh this community is. in the situation that we never expected by city is gone. but we will resilient and we re going to come back. wow my city is gone. cnn s isabel rizal is on the scene in rolling fork. right now that the sun is up, the heartbreak is becoming a lot more noticeable for the residents here at rolling fork everywhere you look

tornadoes in the last 24 hours and all of last year. this is rolling fork, mississippi, one county constable says the community is gone there and what s left? looks like a landfill. at least 24 people are confirmed dead 23 in mississippi , one in alabama and all of last year across the entire country. tornadoes killed 23 people, according to the national weather service. this is already exceeding that right now, state and federal leaders are already mobilizing help to the hardest hit areas. cnn s nick valencia is in rolling fork, mississippi. nick, tell us what you re seeing there. hey jim. we just got here on the ground and it is just, you know, it s awful. it s striking to see these images anywhere. you go in the country , but you know, our attention was certainly grabbed by the site here and just how much damage there is. throughout this town of about 2000 residents were in rolling fork. this is the mississippi delta and this here is one of the staples of the community. th
