Mother says Dalton, police failed to protect daughter who died in 2019 suicide

DALTON— Rather than hurry to the scene of a reported domestic dispute, a Dalton cop tried to protect a fellow officer’s reputation, a newly filed lawsuit claims, then engaged in a cover-up of actions taken, or not taken, on the night a young woman was found dead. Patricia Hayes, of Pittsfield, the mother of that woman, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit May 7 in U.S. District Court in Springfield that seeks $3,775,000 in damages. If police had gone to the woman’s apartment, as police policy dictates in domestic incidents, they might have saved Sherilyn Hayes’ life, the suit claims.

'Precious moments' lost: Former Dalton cop fired after woman's suicide won't get his job back | Local News

DALTON — The town of Dalton was justified in firing a longtime police officer for not doing enough on the November night in 2019 that a resident called to say he feared that a neighbor might hurt herself. Nearly a year-and-a-half later, an arbitrator has upheld the town’s decision to fire John Marley for failing to take steps that could have saved the young woman, Sherilyn Hayes. Marley did not go to her North Street apartment, despite reports that she had threatened to kill herself, wasn’t answering her phone and wasn t coming to the door when others knocked. She was found to have died by suicide.
