Kiwanis announces cancellation of Spaghetti Dinner

After three-plus decades of serving the public in February, the Kiwanis Club of Sanibel & Captiva announced that it will not hold its annual Spaghetti Dinner this year due to concerns about COVID-19.
“We hated to pull the plug on this year’s event since so many people look forward to the Spaghetti Dinner each February,” club President Bill Hay said. “But we’ll be back next year, and we hope everyone will come out then to celebrate the end of this pandemic.”
The event is one of the club’s major fundraisers, supporting the Kiwanis Scholarship Program for local youths and grants to island non-profits that provide recreation and education activities for the youths.

Sanibel voters will have several choices to pick from in the city’s upcoming March 2 election.
Six people are campaigning to take up the seats currently held by Mayor Mick Denham, who is not seeking re-election, and Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench, who were appointed late last year to replace former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan for the interim.
The pool of candidates includes Mary Bondurant, Scott Crater, Tim Drobnyk, John Henshaw, Jason Maughan and Mike Miller. Elections held for Sanibel City Council seats are non-partisan races.
Kiwanis Club wraps up coupon book program for year

The Kiwanis Club of Sanibel-Captiva recently ended its “Diner’s Delight” coupon books program for 2020, a year in which business at local restaurants was severely affected by the COVID-19 virus.
Despite the disruption to normal dining-out, the club still managed to distribute about one-third of its usual amount of books, which were on sale from May through mid-December. The club noted that this would suggest that islanders’ demand for eating out may have been suppressed this year but not gone.
The club reported it is hopeful that when the “Diners Delight” program returns again in the summer and fall, participants will make up for lost time and the islands’ restaurants will thrive once again.
