Malcolm Turnbull has been urged to resign from the Liberal Party after he donated $3,000 to an independent candidate fighting the government in Saturday s Upper Hunter by-election.
New South Wales Deputy Premier John Barilaro has called the former prime minister treacherous and a disgrace after he threw his support behind anti-coal farmer Kirsty O Connell in the seat held by the National Party.
Mr Turnbull owns two huge farms in the region and wants to stop the local Mount Pleasant coalmine from being expanded because he claims it would ruin his air quality and views.

Subscriber only Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has donated financially to the campaign of independent Kirsty O Connell as she battles to take on the major parties in the Upper Hunter by-election. Ms O Connell said she had a $60,000 campaign budget - well below the major parties - and that Mr Turnbull had donated within the rules which allow just $3000. He has made a donation within the cap, Ms O Connell said.

It seems that Shane Wright has been drinking the Kool-Aid left behind by Mathias âdebt and deficit disasterâ Cormann (âAn ocean of debtâ, May 15-16). The economy has not âbounced backâ after COVID-19, as some suggest. Rather, it has been dragged into better shape by massive government spending â but it is still far from healthy. Even the current Treasurer has acknowledged that âthe best way to fix the budget is to fix the economyâ. Full employment and price stability must always be our goals. Budget surpluses or deficits are simply a record of whether the private sector or the government has had to do the heavy lifting. -
