The new draft General Plan elements would reduce maximum parking requirements in the most walkable parts of the city and eliminate parking minimums entirely where possible, alongside investing in alternative modes of transportation, such as the bus system and bicycle infrastructure.
Communidad Unida del Norte de Arcata/Community United of North Arcata was awarded a $100,000 grant for a resilience hub, to be one of the groups using a planned community center located in the Woodsman Hall in Arcata. During a meeting Wednesday, the Arcata city council authorized a loan for Danco Communities to study a property they hope to build mixed income housing on. The funds came from a tax aimed towards streamlining housing. The council did not approve a similar loan for Arcata House Partnership on the agenda for low income housing on agricultural land, citing concerns about developing open space.
The proposal, part of the Gateway Area Plan – a strategy to create dense, mixed-use infill development within Arcata’s 138-acre creamery district – would have extended L Street from Alliance Road to Samoa Boulevard and attempted to make the area safer for pedestrians by narrowing the streets. However, the three Arcata City Councilmembers who can be present for gateway discussions because they lack conflicts disagreed and directed staff to remove that section of the plan.
