People more willing to follow advice when leaders use confident tone

Male and female leaders who use a confident tone are more likely to be listened to, WSU researchers found. A study shows gender discrimination does not affect participants’ willingness to follow advice, said Shanthi Manian, assistant professor in the WSU School of Economic Sciences.  About 1,000 participants were randomly assigned a male or female leader and played a difficult video game while following their leader’s advice to win the game, she said. The participants were given an incentive in the game to follow or not follow the advice from their leader to achieve victory, Manian said. The better the participant’s outcome in the game, the more money they received.

Study finds no gender discrimination when leaders use confident language

E-Mail PULLMAN, Wash. - People tend to listen to big talkers, whether they are women or men. Still, more women prefer not to use assertive language, according to a new study led by Washington State University economist Shanthi Manian. The study, published in Management Science on Feb. 17, found that participants in an experiment more often followed advice when the people giving the advice used assertive cheap talk, statements that cannot be verified as true. Examples of such statements are often found in job seeking cover letters, such as I have extremely strong problem-solving skills. The experiment participants followed the advice people gave at similar rates regardless of their gender even though they thought other people would be less likely to follow the advice of the female leaders.
