Ken Ackley of Harwinton was 17 years old when he purchased his first car. Unbeknownst to his parents and against their wishes, he bought a used muscle car – a 1971 Oldsmobile 442. He still owns it 45 years later.
“Bought this car in 1976. I worked at Maxwell Drug Store, downtown Torrington, and the girl that worked there had it. I was still in high school, working part-time. Told her I wanted the car, gave her a deposit,” he said last fall, recalling how his parents wanted him to buy something a bit more staid.
“I was looking at cars and they didn’t really want me to have a high-performance car and I already had it pretty much paid for,” Ackley said.
