Kelvin Odartei Cruickshank, who is 19 and lives in Accra, Ghana’s capital city, has had a passion for building machines since he was 10. “I started by building prototype or micro-machines such as vacuum cleaners, robots, cars, a helicopter, etc.” He moved on to bigger machines and got to work building, from scratch, a two-person car made from scrap materials that cost around $200. It took three years to complete. Mr. Cruickshank used scrap metal and parts not normally used in cars because of financial constraints. He used motor parts, shipping container panels and iron rods to build its body. A wooden dashboard adorns the interior, and motorcycle shocks round out each corner of the car. A motorbike engine powers it along the streets of Accra.

There’s really very little I don’t adore about this kid and the car he built. The kid well, no longer a kid, as he is now 19-year-old Kelvin Odartei Cruickshank started building his car at the age of 14 or so, with, absolutely minimal support in the form of money or materials or equipment, or, really, much of anything. But, incredibly, he pulled off an amazing DIY feat, and it even has gullwing doors.

Kelvin lives in Accra, Ghana, and grew up without much in the way of wealth or material resources, but with what seems to have been a lot of support from friends and family, and a good amount of scrap materials to salvage.

This boy from Ghana took DIY to a whole other level by making his own Car from scratch. He discovered his passion for building and machines at the age of 10. Everyone made fun of him when he started his journey of making his very own car. Well, nine years later, Kelvin Odartei Cruickshank proved everyone wrong by building his own car that he calls the Kelvin Mobile. Cool name.
Kelvin lives in the neighborhood of Accra in Ghana. He came from a low-income family and his neighborhood was the same. Still, when he discovered his passion for machines, not even poverty could stop him, let alone the criticism of his peers. Kelvin said that “From the beginning, when I started with the project, many people thought l was going mad. They were saying how can a young Ghanaian boy build a car, this was madness to them”.
