In the latest chapter of what he calls his “faith journey,” Tre Watson finds himself as the new defensive backs coach at Cal. It’s not where he ever expected to be.
“He has a tremendous story,” said Cal outside linebackers coach Keith Heyward.
That story was fueled by work ethic and self belief and propelled Watson from under-recruited high school star to walk-on at Washington to two-year starter in the Huskies’ defensive backfield.
The Huskies’ coaching roster in 2012 and ’13 included three key members of Cal’s current staff: head coach Justin Wilcox (UW defensive coordinator), defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon (linebackers) and Heyward (defensive backs), who talks about Watson in the video below:

As Cal prepares to enter the final week of its spring football workouts, the Bears held another full pads scrimmage on Saturday, and one of the standouts was wide receiver Monroe Young.
Young, a redshirt junior from Las Cruces, New Mexico, caught two touchdown passes, covering 7 and 34 yards from Chase Garbers.
“It’s no surprise that he had a couple touchdowns and some snags today,” wide receivers coach Burl Toler III said. “He’s a hard worker. He does all the grunt work. Probably some plays you guys don’t recognize . . . the Oregon game last year, he five or six blocks, which he’s not mentioned in the stats for that.”

Justin Wilcox completed his Cal football coaching staff by hiring UNLV assistant Tre Watson as the Bears new defensive backs coach, Cal announced Friday.
Watson will replace Marcel Yates, who left Cal to become the defensive backs coach at Oregon. Tre is one the nation s top young coaches and rising fast in our profession, Wilcox said in a statement provided by Cal. He brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm to the table. Tre has always impressed me with his work ethic, knowledge of the game and tremendous attitude ever since we coached him at Washington. He developed an excellent rapport with the student-athletes he worked with at Oregon and UNLV over the last three seasons, and he took advantage of a great opportunity he had to work closely with coach Heyward at Oregon. That helped him lay an excellent foundation for his coaching career.
Yates signed a two-year contract for $480,000 this year and $500,000 next year, according to documents released by UO in response to an open records request.
