POLICE carried out welfare checks on nail bars around Wiltshire as part of an investigation into modern slavery. The newly formed exploitation and missing team visited five nail bars in Royal Wootton Bassett, Chippenham, Malmesbury, and Melksham as part of a Europe-wide police and multi-agency operation. No arrests were made, nor any safeguarding issues raised by officers who were accompanied by partner agency the Medaille Trust - a charity which works to combat modern slavery. The day s action happened during an international week organised by Europol and the National Crime Agency which was aimed at targeting child trafficking. Det Insp Eirin Martin from the exploitation and missing team said: Modern slavery and human trafficking are an all too real part of our world today, unfortunately.

Man arrested after potential brothel identified in Salisbury

A MAN was arrested and around £6,000 recovered after a potential brothel was identified in Salisbury. Last week police officers visited an address in the Centros Apartments on Fisherton Street, after intelligence work identified a site that may have been used for sexual exploitation. Police had also received information that a man was visiting the flat on a particular day.   A 41-year-old man from Basingstoke was then arrested on suspicion of controlling prostitution for gain. He was taken to Melksham Police Custody and was released under investigation. During a search of the property in question, around £6,000 in cash was recovered, as well as several items linked to sexual activity.
