Focus still on community

Former top-level triathlete and basketball player Mitch McRae is sporting a new uniform. Kayla Hodge chats to the new Oamaru police constable about his career change. Q What are you most excited about, being on the beat in your home town? Being in an area that I am familiar with. Oamaru is a nice place to live. So, I’m excited to be present in an area that gave me opportunities early on in my life. Q How long had being a police officer been on your mind, and what gave you the push to change careers? Since school it has been on my mind, but I was keen to get some life experiences. It was something I had always talked about with my wife, and she was a big part of starting the process to join the police.

Helping with Alzheimer's

Alzheimers Otago has changed the way it does things in North Otago. Oamaru Mail reporter Kayla Hodge meets new North Otago community educator Kim Ross, who will visit Oamaru once a month from Dunedin to assist those who need support. Q Tell me a bit about yourself, Kim. I am originally from Balclutha and will always call it home. However, I have spent the majority of my adult life in Dunedin. I trained as a counsellor and have a strong passion for working with people and their families. I enjoy people-focused roles and most of my employment and volunteering roles have been working alongside people.

Year bringing challenges for mayor, council

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher. PHOTO: SUPPLIED As glad as we all were to see 2020 finally end, the first couple of weeks of 2021 have not been much better. Kayla Hodge sits down with Mayor Gary Kircher to find out what is in store for the Waitaki district this year. It was a start to the new year nobody saw coming. Rain caused havoc as the district flooded, roads washed away and campgrounds were evacuated. Contractors and the NZ Transport Agency have since repaired the roads, including Parsons Creek Bridge near Otematata, and Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher praised their ability to work quickly with limited staff.
