organized. reporter: while some wore pink hats, some chose the collar red. a day without women would be a very unproductive and unsatisfying day. reporter: she helped organize today s rally outside san francisco s city hall following the success of the january women s march. i am one of millions and millions of women who have been showing up and doing this work and if you want to get through to anyone else, you have to go through all of us first. reporter: women were asked to stay home to highlight their role in the workplace. there is a lot of women that can t afford to take the day off. employers don t allow them to take the day off and i stand for them and for everybody. reporter: ally rivera and kathy bush work for youtube. after therally, they were headed to support women and minority-owned businesses. the chef and owner is gabriella. it only shows we still need it. we still need to bring attention to these inequality issues, unfortunately. reporter: th
police are advising people to shelter in place or stay away from the area all together. the search area is focused around durant and college avenues. good evening. i m dan ashley. i m ama daetz. today s top story is international women s day. millions of women around the world are taking part. today officially commemorates the achievements of women and the progress of women s rights and includes a political element, as well. we have live team coverage to see what is happening in the bay area s biggest cities. start with leeayanne melendez w the message women wanted to get out with today s demonstrations. reporter: the message was if you want change, you have to organize and show up. for some of the people who attended, it was their first time going to a rally and some of the more experienced protesters said they are not ready to give up. it was a gathering of seasoned women marchers and newcomers willing to follow their lead. you know what i find very encouraging is
