Ahead Of Christmas, A 3-Year Prison Sentence In Fatal Drunken Driving Crash By Stephany Matat December 23, 2020 Days before Christmas, a former University of Florida student with a history of bad driving has begun serving a three-year prison term for the drunken, high-speed crash that killed his girlfriend nearly one year ago. Adam J. Mandel, 20, of Weston also lost his driver’s license for life under the sentence imposed by Alachua Circuit Judge Mark Moseley.  Mandel, who is still fighting a civil lawsuit filed by his girlfriend’s family, will also serve three years’ probation when he is released. Police said he was driving a sports car 75 mph in a 35 mph zone when he hit a utility pole.

He told the judge in a court filing – despite his record of speeding tickets and accidents – that the crash was an isolated incident and that he felt remorse over the death of his girlfriend. University of Florida student sentenced to three years in DUI crash

A University of Florida student who was drunk while driving in a January car crash that caused his girlfriend’s death has pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter.  Adam Mandel was sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years probation in exchange for his guilty plea. The maximum prison sentence for that charge is 15 years, according to court records.  Witnesses who saw the Jan. 9 crash gauged Mandel was driving between 60 and 80 miles an hour in the 2500 block of West University Avenue and passed a driver in a no-passing lane, court records show. He lost control of his 2007 Lexus and crashed into a utility pole. Mandel’s girlfriend, 20-year-old Kassandra Guzman-Ramirez, died at the site.
