Writing about environmental issues can be dispiriting, but the outlook isn’t entirely bleak. Here in Taiwan, in recent decades, public attitudes to the environment have certainly changed for the better even if citizens’ daily behavior doesn’t always reflect the priorities they express in opinion surveys.
In this country as elsewhere, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) make it easier for concerned citizens to support and participate in conservation work. Nonprofits have played a key role in several successful environmental projects, including the two profiled below.

The water conditions in the south are severe. The “Shiguo River” polluted by livestock wastewater in the Huaantuankou and Donggang Creek in Pingtung have also become sources of water for the residents of Kaohsiung. The Fengshan Reservoir, which diverts water from the Donggang River, has increased from 20,000 tons of water for the people’s livelihood in Kaohsiung to 50,000 tons. However, the CEO of the Earth Citizen Foundation, Li Genzheng, said that Donggang Creek is heavily polluted by pig wastewater. The water is treated and then given to people to drink.” Although it is all qualified tap water in the end, it is not reasonable. The government should improve the pollution of Donggang Creek and use clean water for Kaohsiung people to drink.
