A sentencing hearing got underway for the Georgian Bay man convicted of driving impaired and causing a collision on Highway 12 in 2020 that claimed the life of a 77-year-old Midland man.
A Winnipeg man who fatally stabbed a taxi driver 17 times in what the court has described as a rage and racism fuelled attack will be handed a life sentence and may face deportation, the court heard during a sentencing hearing.
Okoth Obeing, 23, was found guilty last month of second-degree murder in the March 2020 killing of Winnipeg cab driver Balvir Toor. His lawyers concede he fatally stabbed Toor, but a judge rejected their argument he was not criminally responsible.
