I have the privilege of spending a moment to introduce Justice Kagan, someone whom we really need not introduce, but its a pleasure to do so, and i will be brief. She had a career of extraordinary distinction before she assumed her seat on august 7, 2010. Justice kagan was born in new york city, she graduated from princeton, was editorial chair of the daily princetonian. She then got a masters degree in philosophy at oxford on a fellowship from princeton. She went to harvard, graduated magna cum laude, and was supervising editor of the law review. She clerked on the d. C. Circuit and then for Justice Marshall on this court. She then went to actual work at williams and connelly, great law firm, for a couple of years, before teaching at the university of chicago in the early 1990s. On cspan3. In december of 1917, the Supreme Court heard oral selectivenown as the draft law cases. They challenged the Selective Service act of 1917. One month later, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld that conscription is constitutional. Next, chirstopher capozzola, author of investigates how the Selective Service act influenced men and women during and after the war. The Supreme Court Historical Society is host of this 90 40 minute event. Good evening. I am greg joseph, chair of the trustees of the Historical Society.
