Kidnappings in Colombia: FARC leaders acknowledge full responsibility

In what has been the clearest result so far of Colombia’s transitional justice, last Friday, seven top leaders of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces acknowledged their responsibility over thousands of kidnappings and asked for victims’ forgiveness. They also accepted that these amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

A special court in Colombia has charged eight commanders of the former Farc rebel group with war crimes during the country s decades-long armed conflict.
They are accused of kidnapping thousands of people, and torturing and killing some of them.
It is the first major result for the court set up after the 2016 peace deal between the government and the Farc.
The group used kidnappings to fund its war against the state and to push for the release of its own personnel.

Last Thursday, Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace announced its first major decision, accusing eight top leaders of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia of war crimes and crimes against humanity, in what has been the clearest result so far for transitional justice in the country.
