of washington. more than anything, the waterway really to find the attack on washington come on the ultimate attack on baltimore. the british were really making good use of the waterways, chesapeake bay, and all of the rivers that feed into the bay, including the potomac. by 1813, the chesapeake had pretty much turned into a british lake. the real navy squadron, under the command of her admiral george cockburn had established domain over the water. george cockburn was a very effective officer, who served under nelson in the wars with france. he had been sent over here to pep things up. he was a very capable officer, ruthless without being vicious. he pretty quickly determines that the americans are not capable of providing much in the way of a real defense. from the start, he sees washington as being vulnerable. very quickly, as he spreads his terror up and down the bay, he becomes not only the most feared man in america, but also the most hated. he is compared to a till of t

the gates for a private ceremony. the zoo is celebrating its giant panda s first birthday with all kinds of activities today. d.c. s most famous panda bao bao is celebrating a milestone. zachary kiesch is live at the zoo with a look at the party. hey, zach. reporter: hey, good morning. it is a party here. check out the media behind me. they are here to celebrate the first birthday of bao bao. it is a big, big deal. as you remember maybe just a year ago bao bao was about as big as a stick of butter. let s take a peek at bao bao today. about 44 pounds. here s why this is such a big deal. bao bao is only the second panda born at the zoo to reach their first birthday. she s grown up from about a stick of butter to more than 40 pounds. bao bao means precious, means treasure. of course today i think is an example of that as we see all the media out here celebrating what s happening today. coming up later in the show, we re going to talk about an and gent traditional chinese cerem
