the gates for a private ceremony. the zoo is celebrating its giant panda s first birthday with all kinds of activities today. d.c. s most famous panda bao bao is celebrating a milestone. zachary kiesch is live at the zoo with a look at the party. hey, zach. reporter: hey, good morning. it is a party here. check out the media behind me. they are here to celebrate the first birthday of bao bao. it is a big, big deal. as you remember maybe just a year ago bao bao was about as big as a stick of butter. let s take a peek at bao bao today. about 44 pounds. here s why this is such a big deal. bao bao is only the second panda born at the zoo to reach their first birthday. she s grown up from about a stick of butter to more than 40 pounds. bao bao means precious, means treasure. of course today i think is an example of that as we see all the media out here celebrating what s happening today. coming up later in the show, we re going to talk about an and gent traditional chinese cerem

it is for people my age disorienting. for people, my children and grandchildren s age is the only america they have known and the most natural thing in the world. you can watch this and other programs online at booktv.org. the wonderful thing about the gulf coast, is so underappreciate it and that is good because it gives us a lot to write about. if we were in new york san francisco or chicago those cities and places are all so well known and new york is the literary capital but on the gulf coast we tend to think about from texas to the florida panhandle there really is instability, we have a similar environment, similar trees, long leaf pines, palm trees, sandy soil, salt in the air. the gulf of mexico and nourishes and supplies us with wonderful seafood, estuaries, wonderfully rich and tradition and culture. in and around these things for hundreds of years, it is an extraordinarily rich subject to take and of course along comes the oil spill in 2010 where all of a sudde
