and a helicopter crashes captured on camera. the amazing story of a pilot that walked away. we start with the aftermath of those deadly tornadoes. president obama is offering federal assistance in the areas battered by the storms. the tornadoes left a wide swath of debris from indiana to georgia. at least 37 people are dead. now the focus has changed and survivors, scores of jurtd people are waking up in hospitals this morning. their homes and the homes of their neighbors are gone. people are now picking through the rubble to find anything they can salvage. officials in west liberty, kentucky, say they are thankful the damage wasn t worse, even as the town was devastated by 135-mile-per-hour winds and one reported death. rob marciano getting a look at some of west liberty s hardest hit areas. good morning to you. tell us what you are seeing today. well, gary, finally today they have been able to clear the main roads enough to where larger vehicles can get through, includi
everywhere. i thought it was a dream. a dream? more like a nightmare, if you want to be honest about it. this is what was left behind by a strong storm. total devastation. several tornadoes touched down. as many as 28 people are dead. in some areas, rescue crews worked deep into the night to find survivors and victims. national guard troops were called up to kentucky and indiana to the hardest hit communities. you can see tornado in tennessee. dozens of people were injured in the storms. we are watching all angles of the story this morning. susan c susan is in ohio. rob is in tennessee where we have seen significant damage. bonnie schneider is standing by in the severe weather center. the damage we have seen have been small towns like henriville. how bad is it? reporter: it is very bad. crushing damage. people here are reeling from what happened to the area. 15 deaths confirmed so far in the entire state of kentucky. a couple of them here in clark county. just to give you
like, what if, like, titanic, like part two and we always look at the lifeboats and see, i wonder if there would be enough for everyone and just kind of joke about it, but now, you know, it actually happens. it was terrifying at the time, definitely. but, i mean, i don t know now that we re safe yeah. i m just glad to be back on land. search and rescue teams are still in the waters trying to determine whether there are any other survivors or bodies that could be recovered from that wreckage. thus far, we understand that confirmation of five people have been killed. and now we also understand that they continue to look for people who are missing as many as 20 people remain missing. dan rivers is there in the location of where the survivors of that wreckage have been collecting as well as it kind of has been a central command point as well for many of the search and rescue teams. give us an idea of what they re able to tell us right now about the continued sea

they re hunting. this is him, benjamin colton barnes, 24 years old, believed to have military experience and an assault rifle somewhere in the sprawling national park. and there s one other thing. police say barnes is their only person of interest in a shooting earlier today that left four people wounded outside seattle. so, let s get more on this story today mt. rainier national park we go and to the latest on the manhunt from john hum bert. reporter: we just had a briefing before we came on air here and they re trying to tell us the severity of barnes, the danger and power he poses. they have not officially named him as a suspect, but the only person of interest in this shooting and, obviously, the shooting earlier this morning, when it comes to the new year s eve shooting. barnes has a military background, definitely familiarity with military weapons. we were told that the car he owns was found at the location. that had a cache of armor, also other weapons and survivalis
